about

The landscape of Bachte-Maria-Leerne seems to be frozen like a painting, but if you look long enough you notice a constant movement in every little detail. Listening to Tim Vandenbergh play the double bass in the atelier of visual artist Stief DeSmet is a similar experience, part of that particular landscape that inspired artists such as Gust. De Smet, Albijn Van Den Abeele en Valerius De Saedeleer more than a century ago. In DeSmet, Tim found a kindred spirit and direct inspiration. During a decade of organising contemporary music concerts in several locations in the area, Vandenbergh and his partner Seraphine Stragier crossed ways with DeSmet and played several concerts at his workspace. Conceived by architects Koen Baeyens and Basile Graux, the building is both familiar and extraordinary. The shape of a cube, set angled on the yard with a bright interior, low windows and giant doors, it is foremost a workplace. Like the work of Stief DeSmet it is firmly rooted in nature, while finding another potential in its man made abstraction.
In an artistic dialogue in this space, DeSmet and Vandenbergh created new work inspired by each other’s practice. The collage sculptures of Stief DeSmet were present when Vandenbergh started improvising and composing music in the same space. In return DeSmet used the resonance of the music as a way to shape a series of new sculptures which would in turn become a kind of graphic score for Tim.
It’s difficult to say what originated where and when, but listening to the music that Tim recorded in Bachte, reminded me of the way a painting can forever change the way you see the landscape it depicts.
