about

Manuel Mota’s music is unique because it is open in every way. His guitar playing is not anchored to an harmonic center or rhythmic form, but is a complete sound that exceeds those boundaries.

Individual notes become clusters and time is only perceived as movement. Although formally minimal, the music of Mota is deeply rooted in jazz and blues guitar music. I have known Manuel since the early 2000’s and have rarely met anyone as much a guitar player as him. He understands that the guitar is an instrument of conventional form that has a direct expressive potential and emotional quality.

Recorded at the Roosenberg abbeys, these pieces by Mota fit perfectly with the principles of Dom Hans Van Der Laan. There’s definitely order but it’s both subliminal and formal. The building is radical and discreet and it takes some time before you grasp it's complexity fully. Looking from the outside we noticed the independent rhythm of the ground and top floor windows and stood for a while in awe of the obvious.
