about

It seemed impossible to do a project at Winterslag without providing content related to its past and primary function of coal mining.

The idea for this album was to succinctly address the history of mining towns. The musical proposal wants to acknowledge this past and legacy through the evocation of mining songs. while the literature on coal mining is relatively scarce, the songs written by miners and their close-ones represent an important testimony for modern western history.

The Winterslag site is used as a structure for this recording : each track is conceived for a specific location and aims to evoke its sonic past.

Accordingly, the pieces are sometimes made of a single layer, other times with multi-tracks - recreating a soundscape inspired by field-recording aesthetics.

The violin is mostly used as a ‘concrete music’ element, yet with very few means : using small objects such as paper clips, mutes, fishing rod, aluminium foil, or by controlling the bow placement, angle and velocity.
Musical elements such as pitches, tonality/modes and rhythm patterns, are extracted from mining songs from Belgium, England, U.S.A and Morocco. This process is inspired by coal extraction : after being brought to the surface, coal is sorted, washed and processed - the sterile elements are sent to the terril (1) and become new landscapes elements.

Clara Levy is a violinist and composer who works with the notion of erosion, extraction and sedimentation. In her practice, she ‘re-composes’ open-ended pieces, starting from existing music with a preference for ‘ageless repertoire’ such as medieval music and folk songs.
